Newborn Breast Feeding and Mastitis

There are several things that one should know when it comes to newborn breast feeding and mastitis. Mothers are nervous when they are breast feeding newborns especially when it is their first child. Here are some things mothers should know about how to breastfeed a newborn to avoid developing breast tissue inflammation, or in medical terms, mastitis.

Breast feeding newborns may seem complicated or scary especially when it is about a mother’s first child. She will not know what to do, how to do and she will not be sure if what she is doing is right. In fact, every mother will know instinctively how to breastfeed their baby but there is certain things that must be done in order to minimize the risks of developing mastitis.

Mastitis is a condition that is very common in newborns breastfeeding. This is mainly because bacteria from the skin or the mouth of the baby enter the milk ducts through the opening of the nipple or through small lesion of the nipple’s skin and multiply inside the milk ducts, causing infection. Mastitis has an important impact on the relationship between the new mother and her baby because the pain and the other symptoms that one develops in mastitis often make it difficult for the mother to care for her baby.

To prevent lactation mastitis women are recommended to make an appointment with a lactation consultant who is able to provide tips on how to breastfeed properly in order to avoid developing mastitis. The key points are that women must make sure that the baby empties the breast and otherwise a breast pump should be used to make sure there is no milk left in the breast. Also, mothers are advised to switch the breast they offer first while newborns breastfeeding.

Newborn Breast Feeding and Mastitis

Newborn breastfeeding consists in being able to observe the early signs that suggest the baby might be hungry. Newborns must be fed on demand and not by a strict schedule. However, babies tend to make their own schedule and they may need to be fed every two to three hours. The babies get however predictable in what concerns the feeding schedule. The early signs of a hungry baby consist of stirring, stretching, sucking motions and lip movements to fussing and crying. Still, not every time the baby cries, means that he or she is hungry. They may also signal that the baby needs a clean dipper or just to be cuddled.

Newborn breastfeeding techniques are tried out by each mother and they will stick with what suits best them and their babies. Also, mothers have to learn to make the difference between when the baby is full or he or she is just taking a break. When the baby stops sucking, close their mouth or turn their heads away from the nipple may be a sign of both. However, it is worth to mention that breastfeeding should take at least 10 minutes but not more than 20 minutes per breast.
